When choosing a towel radiator, first consider the operating mode, required room heat and connection position. Height, width, colour and space for towels come afterwards. A hot-water radiator, an electric model and a model approved for dual-fuel operation fulfil different tasks. A heating element therefore does not automatically turn every existing towel radiator into a suitable supplementary electric heater.
Should the radiator heat the bathroom or warm towels?
A warm towel rail and an adequately heated bathroom are not the same requirement. If the radiator is to provide room heating, its output must match the bathroom's heat demand and the system temperatures. An installer determines the heat demand. A blanket wattage per square metre does not adequately account for either the building's condition or the installation situation.
If the bathroom already has underfloor heating, the towel radiator may have a different role. Establish whether it should provide additional room heat, warm towels or both. The desired operating times matter too: a hot-water model depends on supply from the system; for heat outside those times, the intended operating mode must be checked.
Hot water, electric or dual fuel?
| Operating mode | What needs to be clarified first |
|---|---|
| Hot water | Flow and return, connection position, system temperatures and sufficient heat output. |
| Electric | A version designed as an electric model, a suitable installation location and a professional electrical connection. |
| Dual fuel | Explicit manufacturer approval for the radiator, heating element and associated installation conditions. |
For a heating element, you need the documentation for your exact radiator model and the approved combination. Clarify the possibility of supplementary operation before buying. Suitability cannot be inferred from a spare connection opening, colour or shape.
Work on electrical connections in the bathroom belongs in qualified hands. Have a qualified electrician check the installation location and specification.
When replacing: check connections before width
Measure the existing radiator and record the position of the pipes. Height, width and depth are important, as is the centre-to-centre distance between connections. Photograph the lower connection area and the valves. A centre connection is positioned differently from side connections. A similar external width does not establish that the pipe connections will fit.
Also note the free space in front of the wall and beside the radiator. The thermostat, fittings and hanging towels must remain reasonably accessible. The documentation for the specific version and the wall construction determine the installation clearances and fixings to use.
Comparing output: at what temperatures?
Compare wattages only with their stated reference temperatures. An output value for higher heating water temperatures cannot be applied unchanged to a system with lower temperatures. This is particularly relevant when a heat pump is planned. A wider or taller model may offer more surface area; whether it can heat the room still requires the appropriate output evidence.
The effect of system temperatures is explained in the guide Radiators for heat pumps using our valve-integrated panel radiators. Its output figures apply exclusively to the products named there, and do not automatically apply to towel radiators.
What to include in your enquiry
- Desired role: room heating, towel warming or both.
- Planned operating mode and existing heating system.
- Height, width, depth and free space at the installation location.
- Photos and measurements of the existing pipe connections.
- Desired colour and design.
- For electric or dual-fuel operation: exact manufacturer/model designation and available approval documents.
Include these details for focused advice. We will clarify the specific model choice, output, scope of supply, price and availability before you decide. General heating products are under Heating; the enquiry process is under Collection and enquiry.
