Push-fit fittings: How does the connection hold without pressing?

A push-fit fitting connects pipes without tools, soldering or adhesive. A retaining element with stainless steel teeth grips the pipe inside the fitting, while an O-ring behind it provides the seal. John Guest calls this system Grip & Seal. To release the connection, press the retaining element towards the body and pull the pipe out. According to the manufacturer, John Guest stop ends, male connectors and universal connectors are designed for hot and cold water and central heating. As no flame is needed, they are also suitable for confined installation spaces.

Which push-fit fitting suits which pipe?

The outside diameter and pipe material are what matter. The table shows the manufacturer's stated use for each item.

The 16 mm JG pipe connector is also available for extending short lengths of heating pipe and is approved for installation beneath screed. You will find it under Underfloor heating.

Push-fit fittings on multilayer composite pipe: Which sizes fit?

The MultiLayer universal connector is designed for multilayer composite pipe with an aluminium layer. It is selected by outside diameter; the supplied support sleeves adapt it to the inside diameter, and an inspection window shows whether the pipe is seated correctly. Our multilayer composite pipe in 16 × 2 and 20 × 2 takes sizes 16 and 20 respectively. None of our push-fit fittings fits 26 × 3 or larger, because 25 mm and 26 mm are different outside diameters; connect these sizes with press fittings. For the stop end and male connector, the manufacturer specifies PEX, polybutylene and copper pipe. We check whether they fit your pipe when you send your enquiry.

Installation: Cutting, support sleeves and insertion depth

  1. Cut the pipe square, using pipe shears for plastic and composite pipe. Then calibrate and deburr composite pipe; this is also necessary before making a push-fit connection.
  2. Check the pipe end: scratches or grooves in the insertion area can damage the O-ring.
  3. Insert a pipe support sleeve for PEX and polybutylene, or the appropriate supplied sleeve for the MultiLayer connector. Copper pipe is inserted without a sleeve.
  4. Mark the insertion depth on the pipe and push it fully home, then pull firmly: it must not come loose.
  5. Seal the male connector's brass thread as you would any male thread, for example with hemp and paste or thread sealing cord from our Consumables range.
  6. Pressure test using a stop end or pressure test bridge. Depressurise the pipe before releasing a connection.

Push-fit fittings do not need pressing; you can still find pipe shears and calibrators under Tools.

Frequently asked questions about push-fit fittings

Short answers on disconnecting, pipe inserts, copper pipe and pressure testing.

How do I remove a pipe from a push-fit fitting?

Depressurise the line, press the retaining collet towards the body and pull the pipe out. On the JG 16 mm pipe connector, first undo the plastic nut by hand. Check the pipe end before reconnecting and cut off a section if it is scored.

Do I need a pipe insert?

Yes, for PEX and polybutylene pipe; the manufacturer requires it. The MultiLayer universal connector for multilayer composite pipe comes with suitable pipe inserts.

Do the push-fit fittings also work with copper pipe?

Several do: according to the manufacturer, the stop end, male adaptor and JG 16 mm pipe connector are designed for copper as well as PEX and polybutylene pipe; the pressure test bridge suits copper and plastic pipe. Copper pipe is connected without an insert.

What should I use for the pressure test?

Close open pipe ends with the JG Speedfit stop end in 15, 16, 20 or 22 mm. The Speedfit pressure test bridge with valve in 15 and 16 mm is intended for pressure testing during commissioning and can be reused afterwards.

Are threaded push-fit fittings available?

Yes, the brass JG male adaptor in 16 × 1/2 inch, 20 × 3/4 inch and 25 × 1 inch. One side has a male thread for valves, manifolds or threaded fittings; the other has a Speedfit push-fit connection.

Can a push-fit fitting be installed under screed?

The JG 16 mm pipe connector can: it is approved for installation under screed and is used to extend leftover lengths of heating pipe. The manufacturer does not state this approval for the other push-fit fittings.

Why do we ask about the pipe material for push-fit fittings?

Because the connector and pipe insert depend on it. Please give the item, size in mm, pipe material and quantity so that we can check beforehand. The fittings are order items for collection from our Hagen warehouse after arrival; shipping is available on request.
